Mrs. Williams of Port Deposit
Thomas Sully
English/American Painter, 1783-1872
Although not a Port Deposit native, Thomas Sully was the most popular American portrait painter of
the Federal period second only to Gilbert Stuart. Sully studied under Benjamin
West in England before returning to Philadelphia in 1808 where he served as the
city's premier portraitist for over half a century. There is little
documentation available as to when Mrs. Williams portrait was completed
Mr. Sully's most famous work is the masterpiece the coronation of Queen Victoria
in 1838.
There have been thousands of Artisans who called Port
Deposit our area home over the centuries from the petroglyphs inscriber
of the rocks
in the Susquehanna River to the craftsman who build
and carved this town of granite. |
